From tips on creating defensible space around your property to developing an effective family evacuation plan, local resources and experts can help. In this article, we’ll cover key fire safety measures for both inside and outside the home, what to do if a fire occurs, and where you can find vital resources right here in the Sacramento area.

5 Fire Safety Tips for Sacramento Residents

Fire safety is a critical concern for Sacramento residents, especially with the risk of wildfires. Here are some essential tips for protecting your home:

  1. Create Defensible Space: Clear dry vegetation and debris at least 30 feet around your home to reduce fire risk.
  2. Install Smoke Alarms: Ensure smoke detectors are installed in every bedroom and common area, and test them monthly.
  3. Prepare a Fire Escape Plan: Have an evacuation plan that includes at least two exit routes and a meeting point for your family.
  4. Harden Your Home with Fire-Resistant Materials: Use non-combustible building materials for roofing and siding, especially in high-risk areas.
  5. Emergency Kit: Keep an emergency kit with essentials like water, food, and important documents ready.

CAL FIRE has a great website full of resources to help you learn about the tips above.
